The Tacia Retablos is a series of thirty-three small paintings on tin. Their form is inspired by small folk paintings of Mexico also painted on tin and often referred to as ex votos. They recount miracles and blessings offering visible thanks for spiritual gifts.
These retablos grew out of journals kept while caring for my mother, Tacia York, who died from Alzheimer’s Disease in 1997. I started them during Mother’s care and continued for a year after her death.
“I’ve loved her longer than anyone in my lifetime. Our relationship began at my conception and has lasted over a half century. It is furthermore the only truly unconditional love. Neither one’s children nor one’s most fervent lover loves in this way. She is with me now.”
